A well-maintained landscape lighting system not only enhances your outdoor space but also adds value to your property. A lighting system in disrepair takes value away from your property, giving the appearance of neglect.
Landscape lighting systems are exposed to the elements year round, and that takes a toll on your lighting. Regardless of what some of our competitors may say, any homeowner that has had a landscape lighting system for some time will agree that regular maintenance is crucial to keeping the lighting working as intended.
Here are a few reasons to upgrade your existing outdoor lighting to LED:
- Your old system is wasting your money. If you are using old, non-energy efficient bulbs, you likely have high energy bills. By investing in LED technology, your energy savings will be well worth the investment.
- You want to go green. Sustainability is becoming more and more important in today’s world. The use of LED lighting not only reduces energy consumption, but it reduces the use of CO2 as well.
- Your home does not feel safe. One of the main purposes of a quality outdoor lighting system is to instill a sense of safety and security for you, your family, your home and your guests. It is important to ensure that your system provides adequate lighting all around your property, to ensure maximum security for all.
- You are looking to sell your home. Inviting and efficient lighting can play an important role in the sale of your home. A quality landscape lighting system can increase your property value exponentially by drawing in potential buyers with aesthetics and security.
- New legislature on LED lighting. According to new federal law, new systems are required to be LED. Non-energy efficient bulbs are being fazed out and will no longer be available to consumers.
If your current system no longer provides these critical features, it is time to make a change. Contact Premier Lighting today for a FREE quote from one of our knowledgeable and professional designers.
At Premier Lighting Chicagoland, we are often asked why landscape lighting is a good investment. Our expert designers will be able to ease your mind and reassure you of the benefits of your investment.
One obvious advantage to installing an outdoor lighting system is for security. Dark areas surrounding your home are an invitation for trouble. One way to avoid such trouble is to illuminate all entrance points, such as doors and windows. Which will make it difficult for an unwanted visitor to enter, as well as give your home a secure feeling.
It is important to install exterior lights throughout your yard for safety purposes. It will make it easier for your family and guests to see where they are walking when the sun goes down. Installing lights near any walkways, stairs, decks and pools will help prevent you or your guests from tripping and falling due to an unseen obstacle.
An outdoor landscape lighting system will also add curb appeal to your home. With fixtures that illuminate the right features of your property, you can enhance and improve the look of your home. Thus, increase your property value.
Consult the user manual for your specific timer model, as instructions may vary. Typically, you’ll need to locate the reset button or power cycle the timer to restore it to its default settings. But then you need to re-program the timer, so having the instructions handy is a good idea. In most cases you can find instructions online. If you have one of our timers, we offer free phone support re-setting and re-programming your timer.
Minor repairs such as replacing bulbs or tightening connections can often be done by homeowners with basic tools and electrical knowledge. However, for more complex issues or if you’re unsure about safety, it’s best to hire a landscape lighting specialist. Usually electricians will not repair low voltage landscape lighting. If you are in our service area, we have the most experienced landscape lighting technicians around. Give us a call.
Regularly inspect the system for loose connections, exposed or damaged wires, broken or downed fixtures. Always use water tight connectors to prevent corrosion. Burry the exposed cable to protect it from critters and sloppy landscapers. Clean the light fixtures and lenses to remove dirt and debris that can affect performance and overheat the fixtures. Trim the foliage around the fixtures to prevent blocking the light and possible fire hazards. When you see something that you can’t fix, call a landscape lighting technician and do not let the problem simmer for too long. Small repairs can turn into large ones if left unresolved. Landscape lighting devices are meant to be outdoors, so if installed correctly and properly maintained they should have no problem with normal rain. However, while they are resistant to water, they are not meant to be submerged underwater. If water gets inside the electrical components that will most likely short the system. Immediately turn off the power to the system and allow it to dry thoroughly before attempting any repairs. Inspect for any damaged components and replace them as needed to prevent further issues. Remove the cause of the flooding (lost covers, broken glass lenses, etc.). If the fixture is in a place with repeated flooding, then that fixture has to be moved to a new location or an underwater fixture can be used in its place.
Turn off the power to the lighting system, allow the bulb to cool if it’s been recently used, then carefully remove the old bulb and replace it with a new one of the same type and wattage. Using the same type and wattage bulbs for replacements is critical to keeping your system running properly. Adding more wattage can cause the transformer to burn out, and removing wattage can cause voltage to spike and burn the lightbulbs quickly. Always check the voltage at your fixtures to make sure they are working at or close to the required voltage. Do not convert and old halogen system to LED unless you have a voltage meter and you are capable of adjusting the voltage in your system, otherwise your LED bulbs will simply burn out quickly, defeating one of the biggest advantages of LEDs.
This could be caused by loose connections, a faulty transformer, or incompatible bulbs. Ensure all connections are secure and consider replacing any damaged components. Symptoms like these point to a complex issue that needs to be diagnosed and repaired correctly. Consider calling a qualified landscape lighting technician. Check for loose connections, damaged wires, or corroded terminals. Test each light individually to identify the specific problem areas. In the simplest cases, a burned out bulb is the problem and simply replacing it will resolve the issue. However other possible issues could be cut cables, loose connections, damaged or worn out sockets, or faulty transformer not able to deliver enough wattage to certain parts of the system. Issues other than simple light bulb replacements usually require an experienced technician. If you are in our service area, we have the most experienced landscape lighting technicians around. This could be due to various issues such as a blown fuse, a tripped circuit breaker, a disconnected wire, a faulty transformer, or a problem with the outlet where the transformer is plugged in. It could also be a timer issue, or a photo sensor issue (the devices that turn the system ON and OFF).
