How to Reset your GFCI

Published On: April 4, 2024

Resetting a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is a straightforward process that can restore power to your landscape lights if the outlet hast tripped. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reset a GFCI outlet:

Identify the correct GFCI Outlet that feeds your landscape lights: Look for an outlet with two buttons labeled “Test” and “Reset.” It will be next to the Power Transformer that powers your landscape lights, and you will see a cord coming out of the transformer and going into the outlet.

Unplug All Devices: Before resetting, unplug all devices from the GFCI outlet.

Press the Reset Button: Firmly press the “Reset” button, usually red, until you hear a “click”.

Test Monthly: It’s recommended to test your GFCI outlets monthly by pressing the “Test” button, which should trip the outlet and cut off power. Then press “Reset” to restore power2.

If the outlet doesn’t reset or the “Reset” button doesn’t stay depressed, it may indicate a more serious issue. In such cases, give us a call to schedule a service appointment.

Remember, safety first: never attempt electrical repairs if you’re unsure about the process.

My GFCI Outlet will not reset, why?

A GFCI outlet may not reset for several reasons, including:

• Presence of Moisture or Dust: Moisture or dust can cause the outlet to trip and prevent it from resetting.
• Faulty Electrical Wiring: Bad electrical connections within the outlet or in the circuit can prevent resetting.
• Tripped Circuit Breaker: If the circuit breaker that the GFCI outlet is on has tripped, the outlet won’t reset until the breaker is turned back on.
• Faulty GFCI Outlet: The GFCI outlet itself may be faulty, which can happen due to age, wear and tear, or improper installation.
• No Power Supply to Receptacle: If there’s no power to the outlet, it won’t reset. This could be due to a tripped breaker inside your home breaker panel.

If you’ve tried resetting the GFCI outlet and it still doesn’t work, give us a call to set up a service appointment.
